The Zhengzhou Cultural Center acts as a hub within an overall master plan aimed toward healing the natural ecology that was once characteristic of the region. The Center acts as a respectful vantage point, serving as a place to educate the public on the process of healing the landscape as well as a platform to understand and interact with the fauna and wildlife within the region. 

An Observation Ring serves as the identity for the project through experience and form. 5,000 square meters of cultural and educational program is contained within the ring, with connections on all ends opening outward to the ring and the nature trails. Working with the landscape, the building is conceived as a quiet response on the site and is ecologically driven, using the systems within the architecture to re-use all types of water that come in contact with the structure. The landscape acts a filter to either return or re-use the water throughout the design.

Set within the dense city of Chongqing, the project creates a City within a City, rendering the tower as a contributing part of the urban fabric both in plan and volume. Articulation of form and spatial experience speaks to the characteristic mist that envelops the city down to the flow of the pedestrian life at street level. Spaces cascade throughout the project to form volumetric interaction with connection to the city at every level.

The design creates a synergy between the flow of people. Its visual dynamism is rendered from the overall form to the texture of detail, conveying a strong sense of movement throughout various points of the day.

The architecture in turn becomes a strong, clear statement upon which no two moments of interaction will ever be the same. The scheme as a result takes a singular move and renders its appearance as a message that conveys the entertainment function of the project. Within the overall district the design aims to become the dynamic focal point.&#38;nbsp;

The site in the 1970s was automobile-centric, a product of an ambitious but failed master plan to convert the eastern edge of Downtown Houston into an intermodal hub. The 33 blocks that remained were laid barren with parking lots. A majority of the context built since designed a solid face toward the street. Meanwhile, the site sits at a point where the pedestrian network from the underground tunnel meets the pedestrian sky bridge system. Additionally, where paths converge from Discovery Green, Main Street, and the outlying districts north and south, our proposal harnesses this convergence as a new typology for a Downtown Houston public enclave.

In three phases, the project weaves the pedestrian flow of the city through a new strata of street grid and reactivation of the office volumes. An urban porosity replaces the solid face of the towers with a multi-level mix of public program and landscaped green. The existing four lane street is converted into a two-lane limited use, pedestrian pathway. Above, an organic flow of pathways weave the district together, mimicking the true circulation connection. A large canopy above unites the public space, simultaneously rendering the district environmental comfortable as well as giving the area a clear identity.

The assassination of JFK and the police shooting in Dallas proved to be catalytic moments in shaping the way the city expresses compassion and change. A number of movements and physical spaces came in the face of change, all focused on the internal reverence of an event or shaped around the act and process of healing.
Peter Stewart and the Foundation's ambition to create a center in the world for giving thanks manifested in the drive to create a physical space, a universal space, for all walks to come together and reflect. It was a different type of urban condition that was neither plaza nor park. Philip Johnson’s role served as orchestrator, perhaps curator of strong ambitions and beliefs cast from a rooted and impassioned Foundation. 

The process was collaborative, inclusive again of the Foundation’s voices alongside designers, Downtown Interests, and faith partnerships.Workshops continue to shape the spirit of the project and weigh hand in hand with the mission of the Square and it’s Foundation.

Inside the walls, the Rejuvenation is a balance of respect, accessibility, and a renewed experience for everyone. Therefore, the intention behind the core of the Square is about maintaining the essence of place through a balance of enhancing accessibility. The drive is to enhance a space to be enjoyed by everyone.

Over time, the Square became a cluster of conflicting messages, graphics, and messages. Spaces are taken back to their original character and intent, one free of “noise” in order to focus on reflection and contemplation.

The Pavilion replaces an existing plaza that was added alongside the DART line. Over time, the Square has seen little use for this space yet a non-profit investment around the plaza and below, in the underground tunnel network. The Pavilion acts as a gateway to Giving, a front door to the non-profit partnerships, and a landscaped enhancement.

The enhancement comes through the concept of the structure, a pulling up of the site as if creating a new planter characteristic of the existing Square conditions within the walls. Cuts in the structure, down to the detail of the facade, express the conflicting street grid. Cuts in the facade work with landscape to create green portals through the volume. Above, architecture reads as the final planter that completes the composition of Thanks-Giving Square.

The study of Music City Mall in Lewisville was prepared as part of a series in response to our own internal study on the Mall of the Future, reflecting on the greater purpose sites such as this can play. The thinking was limitless in this case, with lessons learned as a result of not having a filter. The project was featured in ULI's fall meeting in Dallas a few years back.

Music City Mall, formerly Vista Ridge Mall, sits in a portion of the DFW Metroplex that is witnessing rapid growth. By all accounts retail in this area should be flourishing yet the mall, foreclosed in 2016, is struggling to survive. This trend is not uncommon as brick and mortar stores struggle and large scale retail growth is struggling to rise. The resulting pattern is one of catabolism. The competitive market is moving with a mobile population which, in turn, creates an often necessary competition that is rendering once prosperous properties unviable.

The trend to merely create another phase in a mall's life focused only on its current program reimagined is unsustainable.

Malls and their collective sites have a greater ability to cause change in their respective communities given their size, location, and their familiar place amongst the population at large. Malls need greater thinking on how they can change and evolve into an urban context, visioning program and function in a way that responds to demographic and economic shifts. Above all, sprawl can trade for density and ecology, aiding in the healing of landscapes and ecosystem.

For Vista Ridge, the proposal was for the mall to remain as a remnant of what was in the form of an urban park. The mall program lining the circulation spoke and hub is systematically disassembled and re-used amongst the site for for future use. Anchors are transformed into flexible incubators, throwing out the single-minded retail function for one focused on innovation and exploration. Outlying areas return to the natural Trinity River watershed and contribute to the region's overall ecology and flood control.

Over the period of 80 years the site becomes a regional center once again in line with the influence the mall itself once served during its period of prosperity. Other malls around the region follow suit, creating a network of communities that communicate and grow together for the better of the region.
